Key stock is used to make a shaft key. A key and keyway create a keyed joint, which is an important element in mechanical power transmission design. Shaft keys transmit torque between shafts and securely mounted rotating components such as gears, pulleys, sprockets, cams, and others.
Shaft keys are easy to mount and dismount, provide medium- to high-torque transmission, and are inexpensive to manufacture. There are some disadvantages, though. Over time, key joints may become difficult to dismantle, and keyways can reduce shaft strength. Axial displacement of the hub can occur if it is not fastened in place by an extra component, such as a retaining ring or set screw.
SDP/SI has woodruff keys, square machine keys, key stock, hex stock, and square stock in carbon steel, stainless steel, and brass.
