Washers, shims, and spacers are circular in shape with a hole in the middle and are produced from various materials such as stainless steel, bronze, nylon, and copper. Designed to be used with a threaded fastener, a washer helps reduce damage to the surface of the material that the threaded fastener is driven into by distributing the load over the surface. Depending on the washer material, it can also absorb vibration. Washer types include flat, thrust washers, lock washers, molded shoulder washers, Belleville spring-type washers, curved, and wave-type washers. Washers can also be used as spacers.
