Bearing Blocks

Mounted bearings called pillow block bearings are used to provide load support for a spinning shaft, either horizontally, vertically, or angularly, when mounted parallel to the shaft’s axis. They are made up of a housing (equipped with or without an oil hole for lubrication) and a self-aligning bearing, which are sometimes replaceable. The bearing can be any one of the variety of bearings below, including:

  • Ball bearings
  • Spherical bearings
  • Press bearings
  • Needle roller bearings
  • Plain bearings (lined or plain with no lining)
  • Roller bearings
  • Hydrodynamic bearings
  • Tapered roller bearings

Pillow block bearings have slotted mounting holes in the base, which also allow for adjustment.

choosing a pillow block bearing

When choosing a pillow block bearing, five parameters must be met to make a selection:

  1. Shaft diameter: The shaft's OD and the (bearing’s) bore ID must match. Pillow block bearings that are the correct size slip onto the shaft without difficulty.
  2. Shaft height: By measuring the distance between the center of the shaft and the base of a pillow block bearing, you can determine the shaft height.
  3. Shaft size: The largest possible shaft diameter or bearing bore size.
  4. Maximum speed: The highest allowable shaft speed that the bearing is rated for.
  5. Maximum load capacity (The max. load will change based on the max. speed): Either the maximum allowable radial load for bearings that can only withstand radial loads, or the dynamic load capacity for bearings capable of both radial and thrust loads.
